My Personal Game Plan

-->             This week I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the ISTE NETS standards for teachers and evaluate my preparedness and ability to meet the various standards and indicators. As I read through the different standards I discovered that although I possess skills in many of the standards and indicators, I lack confidence in my ability to fully implement many of these standards. This prompted me to choose two standards and performance indicators that I would like to improve on most. I then used the Game Plan model suggested by Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer (2008) to improve my abilities in these areas.

The first NSTE-T Standard and performance indicator that I would like to improve on
is: "Standard 1- D. Model collaborative knowledge construction engaging in learning with
students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and  virtual environments (ISTE, 2008)".

G- My Goal for improving in this area will first be to inform myself of the various technology tools available to me that allow students to communicate with other students across the world. I am aware that there is a plethora of technology tools available to educators that allow students to participate in and create realistic situations while communicating with other students virtually. For example I recently read about video and web-conferencing and am very intrigued. I plan to seek out new technology tools monthly that provide my students the opportunity to practice their communication skills in the target language with other students across the world.

A – My Action plan is to seek out other educators in my field through internet research that have used similar tools in their lessons and inform myself of what worked best, how they applied the different tools, what were the pro’s and cons of using these tools, and any other suggestions they may have. I also plan to seek out professional development workshops on blogging and other communicative software that will be helpful in building my knowledge and confidence in using online communicative tools in my classroom.

M- I will Monitor my success by keeping a journal of what I have learned throughout my action plan and based on my reflections throughout the process. This will help me to identify what I have learned, what I can use, how I can use it, and what else do I need to know before I implement it. By monitoring my actions and journal my steps and findings I will also discover whether or not I have gained anything useful from my searches, communications with peers, and workshops and make necessary changes or adjustments to meet my goal. I will then begin small by creating a communication project in collaboration with another middle school Italian teacher in my district. Throughout the task I will monitor my ability to guide my students through the activities and reflect “in action” and “on action” with the other Italian teacher on what worked and or what did not work and make necessary adjustments.

E- Lastly, I will Evaluate my level knowledge and confidence gained with the various tools and the activity. I will review my reflections and ask my colleague for her thoughts on the activity, as well. I will also survey the students and ask them to reflect on their experiences using the communication tools. As I gather the different information I will reflect and revise as necessary and plan future activities according to the necessary revisions. As I build my confidence further I will begin to plan communication activities with students in other districts and countries. I will also Extend my knowledge of the various tools and my experience with them to other educators.

However, in order to fully achieve my goal of using communication tools with students across the world I will also need to improve my skills and confidence in:

"NSTE-T Standard 4:A. - Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources (ISTE, 2008)".

Although providing students with an opportunity to communicate with other students on the Internet can be highly engaging and life-long learning experience that build upon a variety of diverse skills, It can also be a little scary for the educator. This is because it is very important to monitor student communication regularly to ensure that they are remaining within the legal boundaries of the Internet.

G- My Goal is to inform my self of the various ways that students should be using communicative tools like blogs, wikis, ePals, etc. I will also inform myself of the legal guidelines associated with the school district regarding these tools. Lastly, I will inform myself with the best ways to monitor and ensure that I am effectively modeling proper netiquette and that my students are following the guidelines, as well.

A- My Action plan will be to collaborate with administrators and peers within and outside of my district to educate myself on what the policies are and how best to apply them. I will also attend professional development workshops regarding proper and legal Internet usage. Lastly, I will communicate with parents about their feelings regarding these communicative tools and enlist their support in monitoring their child’s communications and work on the web. Throughout this process I will maintain a journal of all of my research and findings.

M- I will Monitor my knowledge towards the accomplishment of my goals by revisiting my journal and evaluate whether or not the information gathered meets my goal. I will then identify areas of concern and make modifications as needed.

E- Lastly, I plan to Evaluate my skills by implementing a communicative classroom task using the internet and evaluate my ability effectively fulfill my goals by keeping a journal of my actions and my students actions throughout the activity. Keeping a typed journal using word processing software will provide me the opportunity to reflect on the entire process and take notes on what I can do differently.

I am confident that with this Game Plan in place I will make significant strides towards building meaningful, safe, and engaging learning experiences for my students that will last a life-time. Any feedback that you can give me regarding my goals will be greatly appreciated. The information highway is a long a windy road with no speed-limit, any support through my travels is greatly appreciated!

  1. Daniela,

I really enjoyed reading your post, and I think it sounds like you have really given a lot of thought to both of your goals. I think that getting students into the collaborative mindset is extremely important, and I really enjoyed how your second goal of modeling safe and ethical practices supports your first goal.

When I was reading about your first goal I was very impressed by your ambition. I think that it is awesome that you have another Italian teacher in your district that you will be able to work with. I would love to have my student collaborate with others outside of my classroom, I just have never been sure where to look for the other students!

I think your entire GAME plan will help you to reach your goal, but I think one of the best suggestions you made was that you are planning on keeping a reflective journal. When I did my student teaching we were required to keep a reflective journal on what worked, what didn't work, and all of the things that happened. I think that this is extremely beneficial because after the stress and chaos of a full week of school, it is hard to remember back to what happened on Monday. By writing it down, it will give you more concrete memories of what happened and I think allow to you make even more improvement.

Good luck! It sounds like you're off to a great start!

    1. Colleen,

Thank you for your supportive comment. This is something I have been trying to do for a long time and like you, did not know where to find the students to collaborate with. I have also been afraid of students sharing information about themselves via the Internet. By setting this goal for myself I will be forced to follow up into it further. Also working with my colleagues class will be very helpful in building my confidence with the program.

You are absolutely right about the journal being very beneficial. I also plan on creating my journal as a word document and filing so that I can access it easily and make changes as needed. As you mentioned, so much happens in a week that if I do not write things down from one day to the next there is no way I will remember them in a week, let alone a month.

Happy Sunday! Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Hi Daniela
I too believe that you spent some time thinking about your goals and the various components of your GAME plan carefully.

The standards you chose are very important for all teachers. We all must ensure that we follow safe, legal and ethical use of digital information in our classrooms. I liked the idea that you are going to model good behavior as a first course of action and then check to see if your students are following the guidelines you modeled. I also liked the idea that you will solicit the opinions of parents as a means of assessing your progress in this regard. Journal writing is a good reflective tool that over time can be checked to see if there is growth. Revisiting your reflective notes is a powerful means of assessing your progress and testing if you have been using good digital tools ethically.

I truly enjoyed reading your GAME plan as it had me thinking seriously about my plan to see if I had covered all the bases.

One question though, how would you solicit the opinions of parents? and, what opportunities would parents have in assessing your use of those digital tools/information?

    1. E Jonah Greene,

Thank you for your supportive comments. I agree, the reflective journal will be crucial tool in my Game plan. To answer your question, I am going to start by sending a notice home to the parents regarding what I am planning on doing. In this notice I will leave a section for questions and concerns regarding these collaborative tools. As I conduct my research through professional development and peer collaboration I will also take the parental concerns into consideration. Since everything is done on the Internet, the parents will also be able to support the activities and progress by assisting me in monitoring their child's postings from home. Each parent will be provided with access to their students blog, voicethread, and/or Skype account. I hope I answered your question. This is a work in progress for me and it will take some time before I can bring it to fruition.

Enjoy your evening! Thank you for visiting my blog!

  3. Daniela,

I think you did a wonderful job with your blog this week. You went above and beyond providing us with two GAME plans to strengthen your confidence and skills in two standards from the NETS-T website. Allowing students to communicate with other around the world will engage your students in a fun and exciting way. I hope the students appreciate the opportunity. I wish I could be a student in your class! Better yet, I wish I could be a fly on the wall to see how well your students handle this activity and the looks on their faces as they interact with students in another country. You should definitely invite your administrator or supervisor in during this activity experience. Will you have students complete a specific assignment or will you be providing a format of conversation for when they engage in conversation with their foreign peers?

Moreover, meeting with other professional and gaining feedback and ideas is a terrific way to monitor and reflect on your progress. I am glad you included this in both the action and evaluation portion of your GAME plan(s). Also, surveying your students is another useful tool and will give a different perspective on your efforts and progress.

Like Colleen, I was also impressed with your ideas and inspired by your enthusiam. Good luck with everything. Let us know how it goes!

    1. Jackie,

Thank you very much for your support. This is an idea that I have thought about and struggled with for quite sometime. In some aspects I need to work out all the kinks first before I truly bring it into play. Which is why I plan to start with another class in the district before I have students communicate abroad. As far as the assignment it will just be a reinforcement of whatever we are working on at the time. For instance now we are learning about formulating questions, stating likes and dislikes, family, and adjectives. So for their collaboration activity the students would need find out those things from another student. They can then add to it if they would like. It gets boring when they ask their classmates these questions, because they already know the answers. This provides them with an authentic situation to get to know someone that they do not know.

Enjoy your evening! Thank you for stopping by!

  4. Hi, Daniela,
As a world languages educator, I am amazed at how much technology has changed the foreign language classroom. NETS help us to plan and navigate through this complex task. To do this well requires the support of colleagues and experts, and you are wise to include this in your plan.
Your goals work well together. It is important to educate students about appropriate internet behavior before assigning them an online project. Your project is intriguing. I can see the value of trying such a project with a local educator so that you can meet to work things out. Perhaps after you work the kinks out, you could work with a classroom in Italy. Working with native speakers in the target culture could seriously broaden your students' horizons!
Best of luck with your goals,
    Cheri Sing
